What
a great day. Giant Redwood trees are REALLY TALL! We left Crescent
City after 9 this morning not sure where we would end up tonight.
Stopped for sights along the way to the tall trees. They are
scattered along the northern California coast in several locations
miles apart. As we ventured south along highway 101, the evergreens
kept getting bigger and bigger till we were in Prairie Creek Redwoods
Park, a combined national and state park. Once again words fail to
convey the majesty of earth's tallest living creatures. They are all
hundreds and some are thousands of years old. Our first stop was at
The Big Tree. It is over 300 ft tall. We could not see the top and
there are so many trees around it that there was no way to get a
perspective. When we walked to the parking lot about 100 feet away,
Lisa looked back and there was the top, way way up there. See the
shots with her in the foreground. We took a walk on a trail thru the
trees and took turns hugging one and then found one very male
Redwood. I hope the X rated photos turned out. We drove further
south till we encountered the Avenue of the Giants near Redcrest, CA.
This is a 32 mile corridor of giant trees and hillbillies with junk
cars and houses. I could hear duelling banjos. We stopped a couple
times for photos and then the piece de resistance: The Drive Thru
Tree in Myers Flats. Hurry, Hurry, Hurry. Step right up and see the
two headed chicken, Gumba the Lizard Woman and drive thru an actual
Redwood Giant. We are not responsible for damaged vehicles which
don't fit the hole. Our Ford Fusion did fit the hole as you will
see. Thus endeth the saga of the Giant Redwoods.
We
came to see the sea so we sauntered off 101 and onto Highway 1
southbound at Leggett. It was quite an ordeal winding up and over
and down the mountain road to the Pacific. After an hour of real
white knuckle driving we came round a final bend to see ………………….FOG
so thick we could not see the Pacific Ocean. We drove 25 miles thru
the fog and it cleared just before we arrived in Fort Bragg where we
are spending the night. One of the locals steered us to a waterfront
dive which served really good fish and chowder which we ate. Then
off to the shore to watch the sunset.
Good
night to all. Off along the seaside toward Berkeley tomorrow,
probably arriving Friday evening.
