Thursday, October 2 - Day 15

Heading North Again

You know you are in the South when people are not shy about their religion or their patriotism. I like it.

Funny town names: Yulee, FL ; Wewahitchka, FL; Apalachicola, FL; Sopchoppy, FL Florida must be full of funny people.

What a great day! Hard to believe we were in Panama City Beach this morning. 446 miles today, our longest driving yet. We have traveled 2998.8 miles. I was tempted to drive around the block for closure. We are in Savannah, Georgia, the cradle of the South. We left at 9am CDST and arrived here at 6:30 EDST pm. 8 ½ hours driving but we stopped for an amazing lunch in Apalachicola, the home of the oyster. I had read that Apach produces 90% of the oysters for Florida and 10% of the US oyster catch. We had eaten breakfast only two hours earlier but how could we pass this place without a sample. I asked a guy on the street where to get the best oysters and he said I'll take you there. We entered The Hole In the Wall at 11:30 ET (the time changes right there) and a dozen each of the raw and split a ½ dozen of baked with Parm cheese. These were smaller than those at Hunts so the shucker gave us 14 each and I have never tasted better. They were briny and sweet and oh so good. Have to go back some time.

We got to Savannah and found our hotel near the riverfront. Had a taste of Peach Brandy and went to the river front for dinner at the River House. I had the catch of the day: red snapper on linguini. Lisa had Grouper Oscar on mashed potatoes/asparagus with bernaise sauce. Excellent. It was 9pm by the time we finished so we sat on the waterfront for awhile and watched a couple ships pass by. Then walked to the hotel. Good night.

BTW I believe that Lisa was a chambermaid in a previous life since she insists on putting a new roll of toilet paper on the roller if the old one is low.
