Friday, September 17 - Day 15

Lisa typing and speaking - we went up to Signal Mountain last evening but we couldn't find Goldilocks and the three bears. On the way down we enjoyed a beautiful scene with the sun going behind the mountain.

Dave here. What a great day. More moose up the wazoo - actually up the Snake River. We broke camp, packed up the car and out by 8 o'clock. Drove to Moose, WY on the Snake River. Parked car and walked about a half mile downstream where we had seen moose yesterday. Mother and calf looked like they had never moved from yesterdays location, lying in the sand on the other side of a small creek. Further downstream we found the large bull moose lying down behind a bush with just his antlers visible across the same stream about 20 yards away. We waited almost an hour for him to stand up. He pushed his antlers into the bush and battered the bush with his antlers for 10 minutes. Maybe it just felt good. He then went to the stream bank and pawed at the stream bank with his front hooves as if he were digging for something but we could never tell what is was. Lisa thinks he was digging for a place to go to the bathroom - like a dog does. I don't. Since we had seen this same moose family the previous day, I was hoping for something more interesting. I wanted a grizzly to come out of the bushes and attack the giant moose. Oh well - maybe next time.

Eventually he ambled off into the bushes and we left for Jackson Hole. We arrived about 30 minutes later and stopped at the visitor's center and was informed that there were probably no rooms available due to an artist's convention. After several futile phone calls, we started to drive out of town but noticed a low level motel with a vacancy, the 4 Winds, and we grabbed it even though it was over-priced. Discovered some car trouble and had it serviced. We then wandered the town going to both the Silver Dollar Bar and the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar. The Silver Dollar has a serpentine bar with over 2,000 1921 silver dollars imbedded in the bar top. The cowboy bar has saddles for barstools and again silver dollars are imbedded in the bar top. Also very interesting korbelled pine was used in the construction. This pine is diseased lodgepole pine. The disease causes large burles to form on the skin of the pine. Rather hideous actually.

We decided on dinner at the Gun Barrel restaurant which specializes in wild game. We each had the mixed grill consisting of medium rare buffalo prime rib, elk chop and venison sausage. Our favorite of the three was the buffalo, although the elk was also tender. Neither of us cared for the venison sausage, surprisingly.

We are probably going to head for Rocky Mountain National Park tomorrow instead of going to Salt Lake City. It's over 500 miles so we may break that into a 2 day drive.

We are thinking of a brand for our ranch in Pyrites. We need to import some elk and bison for the woods and moose for our pond.
