Wednesday, September 8 - Day 6

Woke up at 7 and it was cloudy and chilly - i don't think it was in the 20's though. It soon cleared up to be a beautiful day. Got showered in nice, non-coined operated showers. Went to the restaurant on the propery and had all you can eat pancakes. I only at 4 - I'm slipping.

Up to Mt. Rushmore again and hiked the Presidential Trail. Went to the sculptor's studio where they had Gutzon Borglum's scale model where 1 inch on model = 1 foot on the mountain. While on the trail we got to see up George Washington's nose, where 9 men could work in the rain and not get wet.

Who knows the four President's that make up Mt. Rushmore? George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln.

Borglum wanted to represent the first 150 years of the US. He chose these men for the four stages of development that each represented: Washington - the founding of the country, Jefferson - the expansion of the country, Lincoln - the preservation of the country, and Roosevelt - the modernization of the country.

The carving of George's head is as tall as a six-story building. The dimensions of the head are: forehead to chin - 60 feet; width eye - 11 feet; length of nose - 20 feet; width of mouth 18 feet.

The plan for tomorrow is to go Deadwood, Devils' Tower, and Custer Battlefield. May spend the night in Billings - football starts tomorrow!

More photos to follow.
